Factory worker in China can’t afford surgery, amputates own leg with saw

In the Chinese village of Dongzang, a 47-year-old factory worker was diagnosed with arterial embolism in his right leg, a severely painful condition in which the blood flow is permanently interrupted at select points in the body and often can lead to certain death. In the case of Zheng Yanliang, he was given three months to live — unless he could come up with the money for surgery. Amputation, the local hospital told the man, was his only way to live. Zheng’s family, however, could not afford the procedure.
