By: Lira Dalangin-Fernandez

MANILA, Philippines — Akbayan party-list Representative Walden Bello slammed the Department of Labor and Employment for the “slap on the wrist” of an official involved in the alleged sexual abuse of an overseas Filipino worker.

Bello said the one-month suspension without pay slapped on Riyadh Assistant Labor Attache Adam Musa for simple neglect of duty was “disappointing and clearly inadequate.”

“We cannot take this sitting down. A simple suspension without pay is a simple slap on the wrist for an official who tried to cover up a sexual crime committed against a migrant worker,” said Bello, chairman of the House of Representatives’ committee on overseas workers’ affairs.

By Nels Nelsen

For some people, saving lives is just part of their job description. For others, holding the door for a fellow human being is an accomplishment worthy of Mariah Carey’s 1993 classic “Hero” and a 21-gun salute. The people on this list fall into a third category. They’re the ones who went above and beyond, sometimes sacrificing themselves in the process.

But returning to the original study, it is soon apparent that the stark headlines are not supported by the evidence. The reality is more complicated.
